VETS with practices in Marlborough and Pewsey are running their own vets school, but it is nothing like the popular TV series.

Instead of veterinary students learning their profession as in the television series, the Drove Veterinary Hospital's scheme is to involve schools in the work of a vets' practice.

Marketing manager Jane Carter said: "We feel that we are part of local communities and we need to get involved as much as we can. Children are an open book, many of them not having any contact with animals of their own, and perhaps not understanding that they have feelings and needs the same as humans."

The team takes along domestic pets, as well as a few more exotic creatures including a snake and giant African land snails, into schools, playgroups, Brownies and Scouts.

"The children are given the chance to scan Schmikey the dog for a microchip, and listen to Spooky the cat's heart or purr with a stethoscope.

"We explain the importance of looking after animals. They are also made aware of the need to be cautious with animals they don't know because like people they can have off-days."

Mrs Carter said: "Our main message to the children is treat animals as you would like to be treated yourself.

"Hopefully we are helping to educate the owners of the future in preventative healthcare and good animal husbandry, alleviating fears and misconceptions, while teaching respect and understanding."
