A new pedestrian crossing is to be installed in Princes Street.
Work will begin next Monday and is expected to take around six weeks. It will see new traffic signals installed as well as changes to the central reservation and extra street lights.
The aim to provide people with an alternative to using the Whale Bridge subway. Access to local businesses and residential properties will be maintained at all times.
The work will be done at off-peak times between Monday and Saturday with some occasional Sunday work.
The scheme, which is partly being funded by Zurich, will cost around £71,000 and will be managed by the council's Technical Services Group and be carried out by Swindon Services.
