Psychiatrists and other mental health specialists are set to descend on the town to take part in a national conference.

The event, being held at the De Vere Hotel at Shaw Ridge on Friday, will focus on the role of the psychiatrist and how the treatment of mental illness is changing.

More than 300 health professionals are expected to take part in the conference, which has been organised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the National Institute for Mental Health in England and the Department of Health.

Rising workload, complex working patterns together with increasingly stringent standards are putting consultant psychiatrists under intolerable pressure and risk.

And the demand for psychiatrists has outstripped supply.

The conference will look at the pressures facing consultant psychiatrists and how the role of the psychiatrist might change.

The event, which starts at 9.45am, is open to members of the medical or caring profession. Those interested in attending should contact 0207 383 6254.
