HONDA has appointed Liverpool firm Bibby to handle the distribution of its motorcycles from Swindon to Scotland and the North of England.

Bibby Distribution successfully bid for the contract after tenders were invited.

Responsibility for distributing Honda motorcycles in the South of England remains with Stroud company Howard Tenens, which has held the contract for some years.

Honda motorcycles are built in Japan, Europe and the United States, but are distributed to British riders via a storage depot near the firm's plant in South Marston.

About 25,000 machines pass through Swindon annually, ranging from the 50cc R50 to the 1,800cc Goldwing and the 160mph-plus Fireblade.

Bibby says it will take motorcycles from Swindon to its bases in Glasgow and Leeds before passing them along to dealers.

Bibby spokesman Iain Speak said: "This contract emulates exactly the profile of business we wish to be associated with."
