MARCH 19: THOUSANDS of protesters are expected to mount the biggest peace demonstration yet seen at RAF Fairford on Saturday.
Speakers booked to address the rally include writer George Monbiot and comedian Mark Thomas.
Also speaking will be American Valerie Lucznikowska, 37, who lost a nephew in the September 11 World Trade Centre terrorist attack.
Andy Newman, from Swindon Stop the War Coalition, said: "It looks like the Fairford demonstration is going to be very big.
"People are coming from all over the country and I am expecting between 5,000 and 10,000 to turn up."
Recent protests at the base have led to dozens of arrests as demonstrators have tried to gain access to the site.
On Sunday, February 23, there were 13 arrests after protesters with climbing ropes pulled down the front gate and surged into the base clashing with police.
On Sunday, March 9, there were 19 arrests when a group cut through the perimeter fence of the airbase.
Saturday's demonstration is being organised by a group called the Gloucestershire Weapons Inspect-ors.
Spokesman Dave Cockroft said: "We're working out details with the police to ensure the event is safe for everyone to attend.
"They are being very helpful and want to see the largest protest ever in Gloucestershire runs smoothly."
The US airbase is currently home to 14 B52 heavy bombers.
It could also serve as the take-off point for B2 Stealth bombers when the expected attack on Iraq begins.
Gloucestershire police spokeswoman Marie Watton said: "We uphold the right to engage in peaceful protest and will not interfere with that right.
"However if we become aware of any criminal offences or incidents of disorder we will take steps to deal with them."
The Swindon Stop the War group is planning to hold a mass demonstration at the town centre war memorial on the day hostilities with Iraq start.
Organisers plan to hold two gatherings at 1pm and 6pm.
According to spokesman Andy Newman the second demonstration will be accompanied by an as yet unspecified act of civil disobedience.
He said: "I think the atmosphere will be a mixture of anger and sadness.
"There will be civil disobedience in Swindon and a big gesture but those who just want to come down to the cenotaph and light a candle will be equally welcome."
He said the Swindon peace group is also planning to hold a demonstration in the town on Saturday at midday before going to Fairford.
The Fairford march will assemble at midday in the town centre before proceeding to the main gate where there will be a rally with speeches and music from 1.30pm.
