Swindon's junior international, Daniel Hall, 13, led by example when he was unbeaten on top board for Wiltshire's under 14 chess team in their national team championships held at Knowle, Warwickshire.
Daniel scored 21/2 points out of three, and was the team's top scorer. Two of the four girls in the team, 13-year-olds Jenny Webb, of Liden and Kirsty Lafferty, of Wroughton, each finished with two points out of three.
The team, captained by Robbie Dams, 13, of Westlea, finished in seventh place. The competition was won by Richmond, with Sussex as runners-up.
