MARCH 20: HALF of the pupils at Lavington School took part in a protest against the war in Iraq yesterday.

About 300 teenagers sat on the secondary school's playing field after breaktime came to an end at 11am.

They formed themselves into the CND peace symbol and some had posters calling for peace.

Kimball Lacey, 15, helped organised the hour-long peaceful protest.

Her father is serving with the Royal Artillery and is out in the Gulf preparing for the war.

Kimball said: "My dad has written to me and has said that he is trying to help the Iraqi people. He also said that if the Iraqi soldiers betray Saddam they could get shot and their bodies put on public display."

Kelly-Anne Hamilton, 15, another pupil against the war said: "There are so many innocent people that are going to be killed in Iraq. Saddam does need to be stopped, but war is not the way. "

Tatiana de Normann, 15, is in favour of the war. She said: "Someone like Saddam needs to be stopped. He poses a threat to the world."

Headteacher Martin Watson said a number of pupils had parents in the Armed Forces. He said: "Pupils are feeling frustrated about what's happening and also because it's out of their control."
