DEVIZES were made to work hard for their victory over a Westbury side determined to avoid a repeat of their heavy defeat at the hands of the Saddlebacks earlier in the season.
The hosts made an explosive start, setting up Rich Cassleden for a first minute try, but Devizes were forced to defend for long periods as Westbury dominated line-outs, disrupted scrums and went through a repertoire of creative line movements and strategic kicking.
Devizes' defence, led by the back row of skipper James Gaiger, Nav and Sean Kingerley, did not buckle although limited possession reduced their confidence to run the ball out of defence.
The loss of experienced lock, Jason Giddings inside ten minutes only added to Devizes woes.
A penalty put Westbury on the scoresheet but it was 30 minutes before they seized the lead following a catch and drive from a lineout five metres out.
Even with a following wind, Devizes found it difficult to break the grip on the game Westbury had established. They were reduced to isolated sorties which often petered out because of lack of support or unforced errors.
But the Saddlebacks drew level and then went ahead thanks to two Sean O'Sullivan penalties.
The game was then suddenly set alight with a piece of Fijian magic.
Winning possession from a ruck, Dave OSullivan accelerated and kept the ball alive. Ian Carter transferred to Manu, who found himself in a wing position 30 metres out.
Without hesitation, Manu kicked into open space behind the Westbury defence, followed up at pace and took the ball on the first bounce to score.
Sean O'Sullivan converted to put the Saddlebacks two scores ahead and they held onto their lead until the final whistle.
