MOTOR legend Stirling Moss is being honoured with a suite named in his memory at the Castle Combe racing circuit.

As part of a £35,000 refurbishment the circuit now has a new boardroom, called the Stirling Suite.

Moss won several races at Castle Combe in the 1950's, including setting three Formula Three track records.

The name also serves another purpose, in honouring the aircrew of a Royal New Zealand Air Force short Stirling Bomber, which crash-landed on the site when it was a wartime airfield nearly 60 years ago.

Circuit chairman Howard Strawford said: "When it came to naming our new boardroom Stirling was an obvious choice because of our long association with one of the UK's motor racing legends Stirling Moss.

"But it is also an excellent opportunity to pay tribute to the New Zealand bomber crew and all those others who gave such sterling service at this airfield in wartime."

Mr Strawford said that little is known about the incident when the bomber crashed and any information about the pilot and crew would be welcome.

There is a plan to install a plaque commemorating the crew next year and have it officially opened on the anniversary of the crash on March 13 next year.
