ALTHOUGH I appreciate the courteous tone of Cllr Scott's letter, I can't see its purpose at this stage.
She can hardly expect the objectors to the removal of the Record Office to say: "Oh, we have been mistaken all the time. The county town is quite the wrong place for a record office. The site at Chippenham is excellent. Communications with the south of the county are first class." The arguments they have put forward are known to the HLF and can't be unsaid.
No, the 'unified and agreed approach' from Swindon and the county will have to show, if it can, what advantages to the service provided by the Record Office will arise from the move.
The arguments in favour of it, so far conspicuously lacking, must be brought forward. It must not, of course, mention the Scrutiny Group's findings, nor the evident intention to sell the Trowbridge site. Above all, it must plug, plug, plug the fact that Swindon must have the final, indeed the only, say in the matter.
