WILTSHIRE JUNIOR CUP: (aet 147 FC win 5-4 on penalties) NORTH Bradley Saints left sunny but windy Bremhill View knowing that they and not Wiltshire Junior Cup holders 147 FC should be contesting this season's final with shock semi-final winners Ferndale-Rodbourne.
The decisive moment came when after 120 goalless minutes, in which Saints were marvellous ambassadors for the Trowbridge League, goalkeeper Stuart Powell, no novice to penalty taking, had his spot kick saved by Paul Rothwell following four successful penalties by both sides.
Powell who volunteered to take penalty number five, broke down after his miss but he alone should not carry the burden of such an exit.
Extra-time yet alone penalties should not have been required. It was simply the old football adage if you don't take your chances you don't win matches. Saints' goal machine that has pulverised defences this season simply just broke down.
In the first half hour chances went begging. Man of the match Chris Gale had two headers cleared off the line and skipper Andy Colebrooke missed a rare second half chance before substitute Nick Korynevsky squandered a likely winner in the 116th minute.
Saints, who received a warning note when Gale cleared off the line from Dean Parsons in the 18th minute, found themselves back-pedalling in the latter stages of the first half, a pattern repeated after the break when Saints just could not master the offside trap.
Powell was almost caught out by Ricky Mazzotta and then brilliantly saved John Davoile's effort.
Saints boss Ben Howe was however rightly proud of his side and after all they are still unbeaten over 90 minutes this season and that against the best junior side in the county.
