School pupils were put to the taste test when TV chef Peter Vaughan visited St Augustine's catholic college.
Pupils in year 10 learned the difference between taste and flavour when the chef, who runs his own restaurant in Devizes, gave a talk at the school on Wednesday.
He said: "I have brought along several items for them to taste including chocolate and salt. We are demonstrating today how to distinguish between taste and flavour."
Taste buds can only distinguish between sweet, salt, sour and bitter and the sense of smell is relied on to obtain the flavour.
Food Technology tutor Helen Cash said: "It is fascinating to override your sense of smell by holding your nostrils then releasing when tasting items like chocolate. It is quite a wow factor. Peter Vaughan made it an interesting and fun way to learn about food flavours."
