A DRINK driver who smashed his car into a parked vehicle refused to provide police with a breath sample.

Derrick Johnson, 39, was arrested in Loyalty Street, Chippenham, after police officers were called to deal with the road crash.

Johnson, who lives in Neeld Crescent, Chippen-ham, told the police he was drunk and had crashed into the parked car because he was driving too fast.

Arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, Johnson was taken back to Melksham police station, where he pulled a 2.7-gram bag of herbal cannabis from out of his pocket.

Interviewed in the early hours of March 9 Johnson admitted he had drunk a large quantity of alcohol in the hours leading up to the crash.

Johnson repeatedly refused to take part in the station breath test procedures.

John Elliott, defending, said Johnson was being treated for depression.

This was stemming from the death of his mother last year.

He said Johnson had stayed at the scene of the crash and made full admissions in police interview.

He admitted charges of possessing cannabis and failing to provide a sample of breath for analysis when he appeared before magistrates in Chippenham on Monday.
