WITH reference to Mr Kane's letter regarding Barnfield Household Recycling Centre, I would like to make the following points.
Wiltshire County Council closed the old incineration unit in 1991 as it was inefficient and did not meet European Community air quality levels. The recycling currently achieved at the household recycling centre is between 60 and 70 per cent depending on throughput.
The issue of recycling is being reviewed across the borough in line with EC and government targets which will include the possibility of a materials recycling facility. This facility, when up and running, will enable Swindon to reach those targets and achieve very high levels of recycling for all materials. This, and new recycling initiatives in the borough will need the co-operation of residents to be successful. I know the Evening Advertiser will support the ongoing recycling initiatives, as usual.
