Shoppers in Swindon donated £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Staff from the Hair Express salon spent Saturday in the Brunel Shopping Centre and gave away free hair makeovers worth £40 along with hair treatments and colour slices in a special lucky dip.

Stephanie Stroud, manager of Hair Express in Havelock Street, said: "It was a wonderful day and we were overwhelmed with the public response. Everyone gave generously."

Hundreds of shoppers pledged their support by donating a minimum of £1 to take part in the lucky dip.

Miss Stroud said: "The atmosphere was great and shoppers were keen to get involved." Participants who were not lucky enough to win a prize still walked away with a free hair treatment goodie bag.

Cutting demonstrations were on show throughout the day, while 15 stylists and trainers offered advice about the latest fashions.

And hairdresser Angela Griffiths, who organised the event, travelled from Wales to help out.

Mrs Griffiths, manager of Hair Express in Llanelli, said: "We were rushed off our feet all day but it was definitely worth it. Shoppers rose to the occasion and dug deep into their pockets. They were also keen to learn some top styling secrets."
