REFERENCE your article on March 12 about parking on the cycle lane in King William Street.

I use this cycle lane several times a day in both directions. In the past 18 months I have reported to the police 339 vehicles (one of them 101 times).

In this period I have only ever seen one ticket issued. During this time I have written to the chief constable, whose response was that his officers have better things to do than attend illegally parked vehicles (even if one of these vehicles parks on a blind corner forcing you to cycle against the flow of traffic).

The police have suggested I find an alternative route to work so I do not have to report these vehicles. On several occasions I was told this is not a police matter. I have had a visit at my home from the police asking me to direct my attentions elsewhere.

Coming home one afternoon as usual, parents were completely blocking the entire cycle lane. I could not use the cycle lane or walk on the path with my bike (full of parents and children). I cycled along as close to the cycle lane as I could when a cat ran from under one of the cars, brushed against my front wheel, causing me to swerve, nearly hitting a car coming in the opposite direction.

I then thought I would try the council. I wrote a letter and received a reply saying they had done a risk assessment and they had decided to take no further action but they would be monitoring the situation.

It appears that the law is only for those who wish to obey it not those inconsiderate and ignorant people who choose not to.
