MACMILLAN CANCER APPEAL: How do I get a Macmillan nurse?
You can ask your GP, district nurse, consultant or ward sister for a Macmillan nurse, either for yourself or for someone else. They will assess your situation and decide whether a Macmillan nurse would be beneficial. There is no charge.
How can I get a Macmillan grant?
If you are having financial problems as a result of your illness, you may be able to get a Macmillan grant. They are designed to meet a range of needs, such as heating bills, clothing, washing machines, convalescent breaks and the cost of travel to hospital for treatment.
You may qualify for a grant from Macmillan if you have been diagnosed with cancer and are still affected by your illness or its treatment, your savings do not exceed £6,000 if you are single or £8,000 for couples and families, or the average weekly disposable income of your household does not exceed £100 per person, after allowing for several basic household expenses such as rent or Council Tax.
A Macmillan nurse, community nurse, a health or social worker or hospital social worker can make an application on your behalf.
What information does Macmillan Cancer Relief provide?
Macmillan supports the provision of accessible, quality-assured information for people living with cancer, their family and friends, which can help them to make informed choices about their treatment and care.
As part of this commitment Macmillan develop leaflets, booklets and a website covering a vast range of topics of interest, including information about specific cancers, the practical and emotional issues of living with cancer and information about services.
How much is spent on Macmillan's work for people with cancer, and how much is spent on running the charity?
In 2001, Macmillan spent 68p out of every £1 on services, with the rest going on fundraising, communication and administration.
What does Macmillan do apart from funding Macmillan nurses?
Although best know for its nurses, Macmillan Cancer Relief provides an increasing range of services to help people living with cancer, including Macmillan nurses and doctors, cancer centres, a range of cancer information and even direct financial help for those who need it most, funded entirely through the generosity of its supporters.
