WOOTTON Bassett outscored North Dorset by four tries to three but still bowed out of the Dorset & Wilts Under 18 Vase at the semi-final stage.

North Dorset had been beaten by Bassett twice previously this season, but quickly set about rectifying that by storming into a 15-0 lead with two tries, a penalty and a conversion.

Bassett were stirred into action and good driving runs from captain Matt Hutchings and under 16 second row Frazer Huggins created the opportunity for full-back Duncan Fulling to beat two players for the touchdown.

Danny Toon's powerful run then set up more field position and prop Tom Fidler burst through to score to leave Bassett trailing by five.

The Wiltshire side suffered an early second-half blow when No 8 Darren Lewis was forced to leave the field with a suspected shoulder dislocation.

But despite being down to 14 men, Bassett scored twice more as fly-half Daniel David crossed, then Fidler claimed his second.

Leading 20-15 disaster struck Bassett when a fumble allowed Dorset a try in the corner.

And a superb conversion snatched a final against Chippenham from under their noses

Skipper Hutchings admitted: "We probably tried to play a bit too much rugby at the end but all credit to North Dorset it was a great match.''
