A CHURCH plans to open for extra prayers during the war in Iraq.

As part of the Old Town Partnership of Churches' response to the war, Immanuel Church in Upham Road, Old Walcot is open from 6pm until 7.30pm each weekday evening.

Rev Michael Hodgson said the action is the result of increased public demand for somewhere to go for prayer and comfort.

The church is open to all those who wish to visit, whether it be to pray or simply to contemplate the events in quiet surroundings.

Rev Hodgson added: "We felt that with current events, people would appreciate somewhere to go."

Rev Hodgson hopes for a swift end to the war.

He added: "I am very sad that this is the course we have taken and hope it will be over as soon as possible."

Nearby Christ Church, in Cricklade Street, holds a daily service at 12.30pm and is open throughout the day.
