AT long last Councillor Brown (EA Feb 27) has decided to answer his tiresome critics regarding the spending of the money received as a result of the Brunel Centre.
Once again it would appear that he is trying to fudge the issue.
It sounds very nice to say that the money was used to clear a pension fund deficit and to fund new capital investment and thus avoid the need for more borrowing.
We all know how the money was spent but that is not the issue.
Surely any deficiency in the Pension Fund was the sole responsibility of the Wiltshire County Council and they should have accepted liability.
What the tiresome critics of Coun Brown want to know is whether or not the Swindon Borough Council were the victim of a Wilts CC confidence trick, whether or not somebody failed to read the small print or did somebody decide that the people who pay the community charge in Swindon would fund the deficiency without a murmur? I suspect that the council were in such a hurry to become a Unitary Authority that they did not give the matter sufficient attention.
I trust that Coun Brown will answer those questions without delay. If he does not do so I can assure him that his critics will not let the matter go away.
