The Evening Advertiser has once again allowed the letters page to carry a wide variety of views regarding the rights and wrongs of war with Iraq.

I use the term quite carefully as war is not waged against individuals it is waged against countries.

Whether Mr Blair and President Bush are right or wrong to embark on this course of action to achieve a laudable objective will be debated for many years to come.

History will either exonerate or vilify them and time alone will prove the efficacy of their actions. However, today we put aside our personal thoughts and shoulder any misgivings we may have. For today it is incumbent on the British people to offer support to the men and women of the Armed Forces.

Their time has come and as they cross over the divide between expectation into reality they must do so in the knowledge that all who remain at home are fully behind them. As they engage the enemy we wish them a swift victory.
