THE Solheim Cup is the women's equivalent of the Ryder Cup and generates almost as much excitement.

It started in 1990 at Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida, and was first played in Britain at Dalmahoy, Edinburgh, two years later.

Kitrina Douglas from Long Ashton represented the West Country. Now a successful broadcaster, television personality and writer, she was at the peak of her playing ability at the time as a member of the victorious European team which was led for a second time by Mickey Walker.

She captained the side a fourth time when the event arrived at the Marriott St Pierre hotel at Chepstow in 1996. The Ameri-cans won 17-11.

They retained the trophy at Muirfield Village, Ohio, two years later but Europe won for only the second time at Loch Lomond in 2000.

With the strength of European women's professional golf, this year's Solheim Cup in America will be something special.
