STEVE Taylor, the new Chipping Sodbury captain, eventually clipped the ball 208 yards down the 17th fairway beneath the clubhouse balcony but it was his 19th attempt at his drive-in.
Much to the amusement of a host of members, he was unable to hit the fairway with a variety of clubs.
Eventually he borrowed a new Taylor Made 500 driver from star player Stewart Macdonald and put the assembled watchers out of their misery.
He had earlier used seven of his own clubs in a vain attempt to keep the ball on the short grass.
His charity is the Pediatric Orthopaedic Ward of the Bristol Children's Hospital.
He is holding a special four-ball bowmaker stableford for the charity on Friday June 20, teams at £140.
Most clubs settle for the incoming captain's first drive and some use flags or markers.
But Sodbury members simply guess the distance the ball travels but it must be on the fairway.
