Iain Ferrie (Bowood) retained the Wiltshire PGA matchplay championship on his home course when his opponent David Hutton walked in after nine holes.

The touring pro attached to High Post and Stonehenge Driving Range lost seven of the first nine holes and conceded defeat to the big 27-year-old Geordie.

Yet Hutton, the Hills Wiltshire professional champion, played superbly in the earlier rounds.

After a first round bye, he trounced Simon Amor (Marlborough) 6 and 5, and then defeated three-times champion Richard Blake (Upavon) 4 and 3 in the semi final. He was four-under-par against Amor and five under against Blake.

Ferrie also had a bye in the first round but was given a fright by former Bowood assistant Simon Swales (West Wilts) who only succumbed at the 21st hole in round two.

He reached the final by beating Gary Sawyer (Tony Valentine Golf Centre, Corsham) by 3 and 2.

Last year Ferrie beat tall, 23-year-old Kenya-born Alex McGuinness (Marlborough) 2 and 1 in the final.
