THE Walter Powell School in Great Somerford could have a name change.

The school's full title is The Somerfords Walter Powell Voluntary Aided Church of England Community Primary School but is normally referred to as just the Walter Powell School, after the famous adventurer who lived in Little Somerford and disappeared in a hot air balloon.

But with school numbers dropping over the last few years headteacher Terry Hall has decided to review the school's name for one that gives people a clue to the school's location.

"People normally call the school just Walter Powell and it came about a little while ago when I was told some parents do not know where the school is because there is no indication of its location in the title."

The school was formed more than 20 years ago from Little Somerford Primary and Great Somerford Primary and still takes children from both villages.

One idea that is being considered is to rename the school The Somerfords Primary said Mrs Hall.

Mrs Hall said no change would be made until everybody has had a chance to respond. Letters are about to be sent to parents and the parish council.
