Football: BEMERTON Heath Harle-quins had their young brigade to thank for this fine victory on a very hard, uneven surface at Alton.
Without the suspended Colin Hopkins and Neil Cole, and the injured Gary Burden, the 'Quins played Luke Haviland in goal and Danny Aplin up front.
Bemerton went close to scoring on five minutes but Aplin shot over the bar after outwitting a central defender.
He made amends two minutes later when he volleyed home from 20 yards after good play involving Ian Chalk and Keith Richardson.
The Harlequins had the better of the play and only falling foul of the offside trap kept them from increasing their lead.
Jamie Boswell controlled the midfield and enjoyed his best game for some time.
At half-time Paul Gulli-ver replaced Matty Holmes who was carrying a pulled muscle, and the substitute soon showed his potential with a neat pass to Rich-ardson who turned the defence inside out before shooting against the bar.
Chalk inspired his team mates with intelligent play, and he set Andrew Waters down the left. His pass to Aplin was moved on to Gulliver who scored Heath's second on 62 minutes with a right foot shot high to the 'keeper's left.
Haviland saved from Alton's Clive Ventham and held a right wing cross when under pressure.
The main danger for him came from under-hit backpasses which caused problems as he rushed out to kick first time with the ball often bobbling about.
On this display, there is renewed hope for next season if Harlequins' young players accept the responsibility being offered to them.
