COUNTY FOOTBALL: MANAGER Mel Gingell is preparing to rebuild his successful Wiltshire under 18s squad after seeing them finish the season on a high note with a home victory over Devon.
Saturday's result ensured second place in the South West Counties Championship for Wiltshire, who took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a free kick from Corsham defender Russell Lodge.
Devon drew level, but Melksham Town's Mark Gerrish hit the winner ten minutes from time.
Wiltshire went into the campaign as reigning champions, but were forced to settle for second spot after losing their first match to eventual winners Somerset.
Gingell is far from disappointed with his side's achievements this season.
As well as finishing as runners-up in the regional championship, Wiltshire also came within a whisker of a place in the last four of the FA County Youth Cup.
Said Gingell: "Even though we haven't won any silverware, it has been a good season and I'm quite pleased with how it has gone.
"Losing to Somerset cost us, but they were better than us and I can't argue with them winning the league in the end.
"We have been a little bit inconsistent, but I'm proud of them. We were equally as good as Liverpool in the FA County Youth Cup match and they are in the final now."
All but four of the players on duty at the weekend will be too old to play for the under 18s side again next season. Gingell is already planning ahead and drafted in youngsters Luke Denham, David Harvey and Richard McCrum, who all played a part in the win over Devon.
He said: "I brought them in to give them a bit of experience for next year and I was pleased with how they did.
"We'll have a few friendlies and trials before next season and will have a look at a few players."
