COMMUNITY volunteer Tony Buckingham has received Trowbridge's top accolade for his work in the town.
The grandfather of 12 received the Civic Award for his work with Trow-bridge hospital volunteers and the Link scheme.
Mayor Andrew Bryant presented the award at the Trowbridge Town Council civic dinner and dance.
Mr Buckingham, 72, of Union Street, said: "I was astonished. It was a very nice surprise. As far as I am concerned I really accepted the award on behalf of all of the volunteers.
"They do a lot more. I have all the time in the world being retired. Many of the others work or have homes and families."
Mr Buckingham's work at the hospital includes making beds, making hot drinks, answering the telephone, going round with library books and newspapers and supplying flowers. The retired florist hopes other people will be encouraged to take his lead and sign up to volunteer for groups in the town.
He said: "I enjoy helping and get complete satisfaction from it, I wouldn't do it otherwise.
"Link is really short of drivers and money at the present moment.
"There are many groups who need volunteers."
Link, a good neighbour scheme, helps people keep their independence and remain mobile.
The volunteers help anyone who needs it from the elderly to those temporarily unable to get about through injury, whether they need to go to the supermarket or to a doctors' appointment.
It could also involve help filling in forms, changing a light bulb or having a friendly chat and anyone who thinks they can help should call (01225) 755555.
