CHIPPENHAM TOWN boss Tommy Saunders has reacted to his side's sorry spell of form by slapping a star name on the transfer list.

Former Swindon striker Charlie Griffin has been put up for sale after failing to produce the goods during his second spell at the club.

The 23-year-old has struggled to find his best form since returning to Hardenhuish and has found himself playing out of position on the right wing.

Griffin has come under increasing criticism from sections of the Hardenhuish faithful as the Bluebirds' form continues to dip.

Now Saunders has responded by welcoming offers for player dubbed 'The Chippenham Cannonball'.

Saunders confirmed: "No-one loves Charlie more than I do and I don't want to see him go, but he's not putting the effort in and I've decided to transfer list him.

"He has every quality to make it as a professional footballer apart from drive and determination.

"I'm happy to let him go out on loan for the rest of the season.

"Maybe that will be the kick up the backside the lad needs and he'll come back and do the business for us like I know he can."

The decision has been sparked as Chippenham's season falls apart in front of Saunders' eyes.

Elimination from both the Dr Martens Cup and Wiltshire Shield in the past fortnight means that, for the first time in four seasons, there will be no silverware to decorate the Hardenhuish Park clubhouse.

And if the Bluebirds don't begin to reverse their deteriorating league form, a superb top-three spot in the Premier Division could turn into a merely respectable top-six finish.

Cambridge City visit Wiltshire tomorrow, and boss Saunders knows his side must start finding the net if their fortunes are to change.

Chippenham have hit the target just 10 times in 14 league games since the turn of the year a ratio which must be improved if they are to keep pace with chasing pack behind champions elect Tamworth. Cambridge arrive in excellent form on the back of convincing wins over Crawley and FA Trophy semi-finalists Havant.

Scott Walker and loanees Ian Herring and Richard Kear all return after being ineligible for the disappointing 2-0 Shield defeat at Salisbury on Tuesday.

Mark Harrington is fit again and could also feature, though he will have to make do with a late cameo from the bench.

Meanwhile, Saunders has signed former Bath City and Mangotsfield man Dave Elsey as cover.

The midfielder will play for Hellenic League Yate unless Saunders needs him in an emergency.

MATCH ODDS (from Coral): Chippenham 8/15, Cambridge 9/2, draw 5/2.
