Honda worker Andrew Moore has been banned from the road for five years after a court heard he was driving while more than three times over the drink drive limit.
The 39-year-old, who has previously been jailed for being drunk behind the wheel, was spotted by police as he parked close to his Rodbourne home.
Rhys Davies, prosecuting, said officers noticed he struggled to park on Hunters Grove shortly before 8pm on March 12.
"He mounted the kerb and juddered forward and back," he told magistrates.
"They went to speak to him and smelled alcohol, saw his eyes were glazed and his speech slurred."
After failing a roadside breath test he was taken to Westlea police station where he was found to have 116mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, the legal limit is 35mg.
He told the court that Moore was convicted in 1993 of drink driving when he was banned for five years and jailed for six weeks.
At an earlier hearing Moore, of Hunters Grove, pleaded guilty to drink driving.
Lee Mott, in mitigation, said that the latest conviction had led his client to confront the fact that he was an alcoholic.
Since his arrest he said that Moore had been going to meetings of Alcoholics' Anonymous and also sought medical help.
"He tells me he is never going to drink again and if he is tempted then he has got the services there to help him," he said.
"He realises that he will not live for a long time if he continues to drink the way he has been.
"He is in a stable relationship and his partner would suffer financially as a result if you sent him to prison.
"He works day shifts at Honda and at times has to work Satur-days as well.
"This means community service would be a severe infringement of his liberty making him work a six and sometimes seven day week."
Magistrates ordered him to undertake 240 hours community service, pay £55 costs and banned him from driving for five years.
