Wiltshire County Council is save itself £150,000 per year by entering a green energy contract.
The new agreement means the council will be able to buy a greater proportion of its energy from renewable sources, helping to reduce emissions and save the environment.
The contract is a deal with the Office of Government Commerce, which supplies the energy needs for Government departments and local authorities.
Currently the council's energy contracts for electricity, gas and street lighting are negotiated separately to one another, which means specialist energy consultants are employed for renegotiations.
The agreement with the OGC will bring a saving on these costs.
All of the existing energy contracts are due for renewal at the start of October.
Council cabinet member for the environment, Fleur de Rhe Philipe, said: "We have a responsibility to council taxpayers to secure the best value deal we can when buying goods and services.
"This is another example of where looking carefully at what is available means the county council can receive a good quality service at a lower cost."
