WOOTTON BASSETT Under 16s secured a record sixth County title with a 33-12 win over Chippenham.
Chippenham certainly contributed to a fine match, scoring two tries of their own in the second half, the second a particularly splendid effort by Peter Rigby.
However, by this point the contest was over with Bassett running riot in the opening period.
Bassett's first score came from a determined run from skipper Jon Aston.
Clever distribution from outside half Daniel David left right-wing Daniel Cameron with one man to beat and a cheeky step put five points on the board. David converted the try from the touch line and this set the tone for the remainder of the match.
The second was long in coming, and with the Bassett front row of Frazer Huggins, David Williams and Sean David putting enormous pressure on the home scrum, No 8 Aston pounced and slick hands put talented centre Oliver Gray in untouched between the sticks.
Revelling in this early lead, Bassett forwards attacked hard from the kick-off with flankers Matt Hogg and Tyler Barnes quite outstanding.
With good field position and a rock solid scrum, a clever move in midfield left England full-back Karl Brant to cruise through a mesmerised defence.
For good measure, prop Huggins went on another barnstorming run and from the resulting ruck, Owen Vale chose a more direct route to find second row Tom Fidler with 15 metres to go and it's always five points when the strong running second row gets his hands on the ball from that distance. The half closed 26-0, however, Chippenham put up a strong fight in the early minutes of the second period and Westerway and Rigby reduced the deficit with a brace of scores.
Yet as soon as second row Fidler demanded the ball 40 metres out and set off again for the line, eventually carrying three defenders over with him for an amazing score, the game was dead.
With a sixth title in six years, Bassett captain Jon Aston praised his troops' display. He said: "That was our tightest performance of the season and all praise must go to rookie hooker David Williams for winning all his scrums and pinching a few of theirs".
