NO DECISION has yet been made about where an extra £4.6 million to repair school buildings in Swindon will be spent.

The Evening Advertiser revealed yesterday how the Government had pledged the extra cash to repair crumbling buildings.

But it has since been revealed that the Government has not given the council any extra cash, only the permission to borrow an extra £4.6 million for repairs.

Each year the council's Local Education Authority produces a list of the work which needs to be done in schools over the next five years and the order or priority.

Hilary Pitts, the town's director of education, said: "Once it has been drawn up it will go out to consultation so that everybody knows what the priorities are."

The Government sets limits as to how much councils are allowed to borrow for building work, called capital funding, and this extra cash comes because the council is allowed to borrow extra money to pay for work.

It will mean that, once the list of priorities is drawn up by the education authority, more work will be done.

Julia Drown, MP for South Swindon, said: "Research shows that a clear link exists between modern, well-maintained schools and high levels of pupil attainment.

"I know this will be welcomed by Swindon students, parents and teachers."
