FOOTBALL: THERE were wild scenes of jubilation at the Ray-mond McEnhill Stadium on Tuesday night as Salis-bury City bagged all three points in their vital top of the table clash with Stam-ford, writes Mike Turner.
Leading for much of the game thanks to a cool Stuart Brown finish, Whites' promotion push looked to have come off the rails ten minutes from time when an 80-yard punt from visiting 'keeper Ludek Michalik resulted in substitute Kevin Byrne slipping the ball past Kevin Sawyer at the other end.
City's misery escalated when Wayne Turk left the field following a full-bloodied, but fair, 50-50 challenge with a suspected broken ankle.
With the momentum now looking to have swung Stamford's way, the visitors gambled by pushing three up front in search of the goal that would keep their own promotion ambitions alive.
With injury time app-roaching, Danny Stead-man made the most of a sudden burst of the jitters from the home defence. He rounded Sawyer, but with a gaping goal in front of him, watched in horror as the ball struck the post.
Seconds later City's never-say-die attitude paid huge dividends when Gary Funnell, roared on by a crowd of 468, sped down the right wing and crossed the ball into the path of recent signing Steve Strong who swept the ball into the net.
