CAMPAIGNERS fighting for cycle paths around Swindon have been warning that unless more are built someone could be killed.
Now their worst fears have come true after the death of cyclist Julie Sheppard.
The 28-year-old keen cyclist died after she was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing in Marlborough Road.
While no one can say for sure a cycle lane would have prevented the accident, it certainly would have made it less likely.
Swindon Borough Council has agreed to spend £640,000 on new cycle paths around the borough, it now must get on and install them as quickly as possible.
While the Government is putting the squeeze on motorists through road tax and petrol duty, and parking feed continue to escalate, the number of people who would like to cycle to work is increasing by the week.
But who could blame anyone for thinking twice about risking their lives amid rush hour traffic.
At least a dedicated will provide some kind of safe haven for anyone who wants to get on their bike.
Mrs Sheppard's death will not have been in vain if the council uses it as motivation to make Swindon safe for all cyclists.
