PEACE campaigners held a vigil at the Hathaway roundabout in Chippenham on Friday, to protest about the war in Iraq.

More than 20 people, carrying placards and banners, stood for an hour at the top of New Road.

Many drivers beeped in support, according to Chippenham Stop the War Coalition spokesman Ian Mills, though some people shouted their opposition.

The vigil was the third held by the peace protesters at the roundabout. One was held the day the war began, and then every subsequent Friday.

The group intends to continue the vigils as long as the war in Iraq continues.

Tomorrow the group hopes to muster support for a picket when North Wiltshire MP James Gray holds his Chippenham surgery for constituents.

"We shall be organising coaches from Chippenham to the demonstration in London on April 12," said Mr Mills. "We support our troops but we want them back home."
