SOME pensioners could double their income if they claimed the benefits they are entitled to, according to Age Concern Wiltshire.
The charity is launching Your Rights Week tomorrow, a campaign to encourage pensioners to claim the benefits they are entitled to, especially with increases in Social Security benefits coming into force on Monday.
It says that pensioners are the biggest single group missing out on state benefits. Government figures show that up to 770,000 older people who are eligible for the Minimum Income Guarantee (income support) do not claim it, leaving up to £940 million unclaimed annually.
Age Concern Wiltshire advised nearly 100 older people about their benefit entitlements last year resulting in the claiming back of £147,000.
Christine Tucker, information and advice worker at Age Concern Wiltshire, said pensioners are often put off applying for benefits because of the complexity of the system while others fear there is a stigma attached.
She said the charity offers free, independent and confidential advice and gives people practical help with their claims.
Advisers are available Monday to Friday on (01380) 735500 from 9am to 4pm or at 13 Market Place, Devizes.
