THE RSPCA has pleaded with people to be patient during the mating season while male swans exhibit aggressive territorial behaviour.

One particular cob, or male swan, has been defending his territory on the Kennet and Avon Canal close to Coate Bridge, near Devizes.

Anglers, walkers and joggers have been the targets for his displeasure and one runner reported being chased for over half a mile by the demented bird.

Canoeists training for the upcoming Devizes to Westminster canoe race regularly report being harassed by swans.

The RSPCA said they had received calls from anxious mothers in the area, appealing to them to move the swan.

But Lucy Clark, a public relations officer for the charity, said: "This is classic male behaviour for swans. They will try to defend their territory but it is very rare that anyone is seriously injured by them. This happens every year and there is little you can do except give them a wide berth.

"You can't move swans unless you have a licence.

"Our advice is: don't antagonise them, don't feed them and keep dogs on a lead."
