TOWN councillors in Marlborough are opposing plans for a garden room that they say would be out of keeping with neighbouring buildings, including St Mary's Church.
Janet Ingram has applied for planning consent for a garden room behind her home in Silverless Street that backs on to the churchyard.
On Monday the town council's planning committee voted eight to nil to object to the plans saying the proposal was out of keeping.
Councillors agreed that the garden room which Coun David Watson described as having an oriental-looking roof was incompatible with other buildings in the area and because of its proximity to St Mary's Church in particular.
One neighbour had submitted a written objection fearing that the proposed structure could restrict daylight into their property.
Coun Bryan Castle said St Mary's churchwardens were concerned about the proposal.
The plan will now go before Kennet District Council, which will decide whether to grant planning permission.
