COUNCILLOR Nick Martin is probably right when he says the Steam Museum will never be profitable, but it is good to see there at least seems to be some kind of commitment to securing its future by cutting down on losses.
The real challenge, however, lies in making sure the recommendations made in the Steam Task Group's report become a reality.
It is all very well making worthy claims about what could be done, but if those recommendations are never acted on, this will have been nothing but a waste of time and money.
There must be a commitment to Steam in the long-term as there is no question that such a museum has a place in the town.
And even though it will never achieve profitability, the costs it incurs are worth it if only to ensure Swindon's railway heritage is never forgotten.
