SWINDON under 14s won the plate final at the Newbury 10's Festival.
The first game was against Welsh side Nelson. Swindon got off to a poor start and spent the first half defending and conceded an unconverted try.
The second half sawx a much better performance and saw Jason Wright pick up on his own 22-metre line and sidestep four players to score under the posts. The try was converted by Michael Calvert as Swindon went on to win 7-5.
The second game was against Winchester with the first Swindon try coming straight from the kick-off and the second from the ensuing re-start.
Winchester tried to come back into the game in the second half but a third try finished them off. All three tries were scored by Wright and converted by Calvert.
The final game in the group was against the hosts, Newbury. Swindon took an early lead again through the Wright/Calvert combination with Newbury replying just before the half-time whistle.
Newbury took charge after the break and ran in a further three tries to win 28-7.
The final placing saw three teams on equal points but based on points scored, Swindon were placed third and so went forward to the knockout stages of the plate competition.
The first encounter was against Maidstone and again Swindon shone with Wright scoring a try in each half. Sam Morley and Grant Hurry also got on the score sheet with three of the four tries being converted by Calvert in a 26-0 win.
Swindon met Winchester again in the semi-final and continued where they had left off from their earlier encounter with tries from Wright (2), Phil Cozens and Josh Shave and conversions from Dan Whitmore. Winchester scored two unconverted tries but to no avail.
In the plate final against Havant, Wright again scored a try early in the first half, taking his tally for the tournament to 10. This was followed shortly after with a try in the corner from Dan Whitmore. Neither try was converted, and Swindon won 10-0.
