SWINDON Supermarine were unable to cap a remarkable season with some silverware yesterday.
Ray Baverstock's side fresh from cementing their place in the Dr Martens League at the weekend were beaten 3-1 in the Wiltshire Premier Shield final by hosts Salisbury.
No doubt Marine's Saturday night celebrations continued into the small hours of Saturday morning and the raging hangover was clear to see as Salisbury raced into a 3-0 lead inside of 35 minutes to effectively finish the job.
Adam Wallace started the spree on 17 minutes, escaping the attention of Darren McCluskey to fire home despite Marine's offside protests.
Steve Strong made it 2-0 six minutes later, netting at the second attempt after Elliott Jackson had parried his initial effort.
Marine fell further behind on 34 when John Purchase scored from close range following a Wallace free-kick.
Baverstock's men improved after the break, without ever looking capable of bridging the gap.
Jimmy Carter headed Simon Futcher's corner over, Richard Bourne fired wide, and Barrie Matthews had an effort saved by former Cirencester keeper Kevin Sawyer.
Marine did pinch a goal back on 74 minutes when the lively Dave Slattery slotted in the rebound after Futcher's strike was blocked.
Slattery also headed against a post late on, but further Marine heroics were not on the cards on this occasion.
"It was after the Lord Mayor's show," said Baverstock. "I think the lads were mentally drained after the last few weeks which is understandable.
"I'm disappointed we didn't win, but our aim was to stay in the Dr Martens League we've done that and now we can look forward to next season."
