STAFF at the Barcroft Practice, in Amesbury, have said goodbye to one of their popular partners, Dr David Smith.
Dr Smith retired on Friday after more than 40 years in the medical profession - the past 35 in Amesbury.
Dr Smith, who lives in South Mill Close, Amesbury, with his wife Julia, qualified in 1962 at Guy's Hospital.
He then became house physician in medicine, paediatrics and ophthalmology at the Royal County Hospital in Ryde, before moving to become house surgeon at Swindon's Victoria Hospital.
Dr Smith trained as a GP at Kingston-on-Thames and from 1963 to 1965 worked as a school and clinic medical officer for Cornwall county council.
He then spent three years as deputy medical officer of health for Grimsby rural district council before moving south to Amesbury as a GP.
During his long service in the town, Dr Smith has also acted as part-time medical officer for Pains Wessex Schermuly, at High Post, and has been medical officer for Manor School, Great Durnford, for Cathedral Glass and for Tennex UK, at High Post.
Dr Smith's experience in lead working and ionising radiation led him to be a health and safety executive factory doctor.
His retirement will allow Dr Smith to enjoy more of his hobbies, which include local history, archaeology, fishing, breeding and showing dogs, cricket and music.
