SCREWFIX DIRECT LEAGUE: BRIDGWATER lifted the Les Phillips Cup at Melksham on Saturday, the first time the prestigious Screwfix Direct League had been staged by a Wiltshire club.
On a well prepared surface, neither Bridgwater nor Brislington found it easy to settle, with the swirling wind a crucial factor.
On the half hour skipper Paul Toms headed over from close range, which started the best ten minute spell for Trevor Senior's men. In what proved to be the best display of the match Paul Heywood hit a scorching 30 yard drive after controlling a well hit pass.
With the ball flying into the top corner there was little anyone could do to stop it.
Referee Jon Cordy played an important part in this fine advertisement for Western League football imposing himself when necessary, but giving the players the chance to express themselves.
Mrs Jane Phillips, Les Phillips' widow, drove from her home in Wimborne and octogenarian Mervyn Phillips, brother of Les, made the trip from his Ilfracombe home to present the end of match trophies.
League chairman Cliff Ashton paid tribute to Melksham chairman Mike Perrin, secretary Dave Phillips and their band of helpers for their hard work in staging the final in such a fine manner.
