POLICE are warning people to check the identity of callers after distraction burglars tried to fool an elderly Chippenham man into believing they were water board officials.
The two men called at the home of the elderly man in Allington Way at 4.45pm on Friday and waved a supposed identity card without allowing him to check it.
They asked if they could turn the water off but the resident, who had been a victim of distraction burglars before, grew suspicious and did not believe them. He told the men to leave and closed the door, later observing them walking to a nearby park.
The first man was white, with short hair, wearing a dark blue bomber jacket. The second man was white, wearing light clothes.
The police have appealed for information from anyone who might have seen the two men.
Inspector Mark Power said that people should check the identity of callers very closely. He said noone should be allowed in if the householder has any doubts.
