DENIS Law proved popular with the crowds again as he did in his playing days during an STFC sporting dinner at the County Ground last night.

The former Manchester United and Scotland centre forward scored 227 goals in 481 playing appearances and he scored again at Town's Winners' Lounge last night.

The former two-times championship winner, FA Cup winner and European Footballer of the Year in 1964 entertained a packed house on what was his first visit to the Wiltshire town.

Law revealed: "It's the first time I have actually been to Swindon. It seems a lovely place, the people are terrific and it's a smashing little club.

"I never got to play here during my playing career, although I wish I had because they had a very good team during my era.

"I remember the 1969 team with Don Rogers which won the League Cup Final."

The 63-year-old is now a big hit on the after-dinner circuit and he added: "Hopefully I've still got a few stories in the bag that people enjoy."

That he had, before the evening moved on to the auction items, including a framed collage of the great man's career, a signed, limited edition print of Henry Cooper's epic fight with Cassius Clay, and a framed, signed collage of Manchester United's most illustrious managers.
