NEXT week is Walk to School Week and children throughout the county are being encouraged to take the healthy option.
More than 100 schools in Wiltshire will be taking part in the initiative, which aims to promote alternatives to the school run.
Bill Prendergast of Wiltshire County Council said: "Reliance on the car to take children to school should be of concern to everyone. We know the high volume of cars on the school run leads to increased congestion and pollution outside the school gates, and contributes to a decline in children's health and fitness. I am delighted that a record number of schools in Wiltshire have decided to take part in Walk to School Week. Surveys suggest that many pupils do not want to be chauffeured to school, and that teachers are strongly in favour of encouraging children to walk."
About 20 per cent of the cars on Wiltshire's roads at 8.50am are on the school run, with 46 per cent of children in the county being driven to school.
Many of the 107 schools involved will also be taking part in another county council scheme, Walk on Wednesdays, which will be monitored for the next two terms.
