THE leader of Wiltshire County Council's Liberal Democrats is to step down at the group's annual meeting on June 7.
Cllr Paul Sample was first elected to the council in 1993. He is a former chairman of the libraries and heritage committee and was group social services spokesman before becoming county group leader in May 2001.
He is managing director of a PR and marketing company in Salisbury where he represents the St Martin Division on the County Council.
Cllr Sample said: "I am making the decision now in order that a new leader can be nominated in plenty of time for our AGM. By quitting now the new Lib Dem leader has time to 'bed in' before the next set of elections in May 2005 and I can concentrate on representing the residents who elected me.
"I would like to thank my Group and the Party in Wiltshire for the support they have given to me and I wish the new leader the very best for the future."
