A NEWLY-FORMED majorette troupe need to raise thousands of pounds to buy uniforms if they are to fulfil their dreams of competing.

Sapphire Majorettes started up in Warminster in March and already has 30 members. There is also a branch in Westbury with 23 members, which began in 2002.

The girls practise every Friday at Warminster Sports Centre but so far have not been able to afford to buy uniforms.

Troupe leader Sue Alexander said: "We have sent out over 50 letters to firms in Warminster asking for sponsorship and help to buy the much needed uniforms for the group.

"So far we've not had one reply back, it's a bit disappointing for the girls. One uniform alone can cost £60 plus. All the girls will need at least three uniforms and some even more."

Mrs Alexander said the girls hope to enter competitions around the uk and even abroad.

She said: "Members of the Westbury branch won a competition last month. Because they did not have all the equipment they had to rip up old trousers to make the pom poms."

Anyone wishing to support the group can contact Mrs Alexander on (01373) 859778. Cheques payable to 'Sapphire Majorettes' can be sent to 15 The Crescent, Westbury, BA13 3HE.
