Further to my letter (Wiltshire Times April 4) about the Codford-Heytesbury Improvement, CPRE recently submitted a new Alternative Solution to this scheme (drawn up by a qualified civil engineer), which would have the effect of reducing accidents along this dangerous stretch of road without carving up the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
We have had confirmation from the County Council that they will be appraising our scheme in addition to their own, and both options will be compared to the present situation. Taxpayers will be interested to know our scheme would cost less than half the expected cost of the original scheme to implement. The scheme involves a new, safer layout at the Chitterne road junction, with traffic lights, straightening out the sharp bend, traffic lights at the Upton Lovell road junction and a new, safer layout close to the Hillside Cafe.
